The Drive

Fri 18 to Sun 20 · three easy days, three coastal overnights

  • Morning swim, pack, on the road by 10am
  • Byron Bay (1 hr): Cape Byron lighthouse walk, the easternmost point of Australia, whales off the headland. Lunch in town.
  • Afternoon: land at your coastal stop and hit the beach
Pick your overnight: Evans Head is quiet and classic with a river mouth, surf beach and great fish and chips at the co-op. Yamba (50 min further) is livelier: ocean pool under the lighthouse, Pippi Beach, the Pacific Hotel with cracking ocean views, and Angourie Blue Pools 10 min away.
Route in Google Maps
  • Swim or coastal walk before leaving
  • Detour up to Dorrigo National Park: the Skywalk over the rainforest canopy, then the Wonga Walk to Crystal Shower Falls where you walk behind the waterfall
  • Coffee and lunch in Bellingen on the way back down
  • Optional: the Big Banana at Coffs if the kids want the toboggan
  • Late arvo in Port Macquarie: breakwall walk past hundreds of painted rocks, dinner by the water

Route in Google Maps
  • Morning in Port Mac: Koala Hospital (free entry) and a quick swim at Town or Flynns Beach

Crowds

Mid-September is before school holidays, so it is quiet and walk-up works almost everywhere.

Water temp

Around 21°C on the Gold Coast in September. Fine for swimming, pack rashies.

Cold spots

Dorrigo mountain mornings and Sydney evenings need a jumper.

The car

Keeping it until Wed 7pm at Sydney Airport. In the city leave it parked and use ferries and trains; budget for hotel parking.
